What Is Samos Known For?

Samos gave the world one of mathematics' most fundamental theorems, and the modern town nearest to where its author was born still carries his name today.

Samos is known first for Pythagoras, born on the island around 570 BC and remembered for the geometric theorem that still bears his name, one of the foundational rules taught in mathematics classrooms worldwide. In 1955, the town once called Tigani was renamed Pythagoreion in his honor, and the site today includes the remains of the Eupalinos Tunnel, an ancient aqueduct dug simultaneously from both ends of a mountain to meet precisely in the middle, an engineering feat significant enough that Herodotus described it in detail centuries later.

The island is equally known for the Heraion, a sanctuary dedicated to Hera, whom Greek mythology holds was born and raised on Samos. The first temple on the site went up in the 8th century BC, and Herodotus considered it the largest in Greece during his lifetime. Under the tyrant Polycrates, around 535 to 522 BC, the sanctuary was rebuilt on a considerably larger scale, ringed by 155 columns standing roughly 20 meters tall, though only one column remains upright today. Pythagoreion and the Heraion were jointly recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

Samos also claims the astronomer Aristarchus, who proposed the first known heliocentric model of the solar system centuries before Copernicus, and the philosopher Epicurus, both born on the island, and the local airport now carries Aristarchus's name in tribute. Connecting Samos's ancient scientific and mythological legacy, the island links by ferry to Ikaria and Patmos across the eastern Aegean.
