Where Should I Stay on Dokos?

Dokos works differently from every other island in this guide, since there are no hotels, guesthouses, or rentals on it at all, and where to stay means choosing how to experience that instead.

Dokos has no electricity grid, no municipal water, and no accommodation of any kind, so overnight options come down to two real choices. Sailors anchor in Skintos Bay, the island's sheltered northeastern cove, and spend the night aboard their own boat, waking up to water clarity and stargazing that a day trip can't match. Experienced campers, fully self-sufficient and following leave-no-trace principles, use the same bay for a night on land near the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos.

For nearly everyone else, the practical approach is basing on Hydra, Spetses, or the Ermioni coast and visiting Dokos by water taxi or private boat for a few hours of swimming, snorkeling, and hiking to the ruins of the ancient settlement. A single primitive taverna in Skintos Bay opens occasionally in peak summer, but shouldn't be relied on for food or water.

Once a base on a neighboring island is decided, hotels and places to stay near Dokos cover Hydra, Spetses, and the mainland coast, giving easy access for a day on the water. Sailors and experienced campers suit an overnight stay in Skintos Bay, while everyone else gets the fuller experience by pairing Dokos with a comfortable base nearby and returning by boat whenever the weather and time allow.
