Getting from Aegina to Alexandroupoli

If you are heading to Alexandroupoli from Aegina you are making your way to the far northeastern corner of Greece, a city on the Thracian coast close to the Turkish border and the gateway to Samothrace.

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Alexandroupoli. The most practical ferry approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then board the Piraeus to Alexandroupoli ferry via Lavrio, which takes over a day at sea and is not a realistic option for most travellers.

Getting there by air

Both Alexandroupoli and Athens have airports. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Alexandroupoli takes around 1 hour 15 minutes in the air. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours and is the only practical approach.

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and fly to Alexandroupoli. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are travelling with a car, take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and then drive northeast via the E75 and Egnatia motorway to Alexandroupoli, which takes around 8 to 9 hours from Athens. If you are planning to visit Samothrace from Alexandroupoli, ferries to the island depart from the port daily in summer with the trip taking around 1 hour 45 minutes.
