Getting from Aegina to Ithaca

If you are heading to Ithaca from Aegina you are making your way to an island in the Ionian Sea, on the opposite side of Greece. It is the legendary home of Odysseus with a deep central bay at Vathy that is one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the Ionian.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Ithaca. No Ionian island is connected by sea to any Saronic island. The most practical ferry approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then travel by road to Astakos on the western mainland for the ferry to Ithaca, which takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. The drive from Athens to Astakos takes around 3.5 to 4 hours.

Getting there by air

Ithaca has no airport. The nearest airport is Kefalonia. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Kefalonia, followed by the short ferry from Kefalonia to Ithaca taking around 20 to 30 minutes, gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, fly to Kefalonia and take the short ferry across to Ithaca. It is the most time efficient approach. If you are travelling with a car, take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and drive to Astakos or Kylini for the ferry across to Ithaca via Kefalonia.
