Getting from Aegina to Kastellorizo

If you are heading to Kastellorizo from Aegina you are making one of the longer journeys in the Greek island world, to the easternmost point of Greece, a tiny island just off the Turkish coast with a harbour of neoclassical mansions, the extraordinary Blue Cave and an atmosphere of complete tranquility.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Kastellorizo. The most practical ferry approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then board the Piraeus to Kastellorizo ferry, which runs 6 times a week and takes around 20 to 22 hours, stopping at multiple Dodecanese islands along the way. It is a long total journey but a remarkable one through the Dodecanese island group.

Getting there by air

Kastellorizo has its own small airport with connections from Athens via Rhodes. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Kastellorizo via Rhodes gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and fly to Kastellorizo via Athens and Rhodes. It is the fastest and most practical approach. Give yourself at least two nights on Kastellorizo. The island is small enough to walk around in an afternoon and extraordinary enough to make you want to stay much longer.
