Getting from Aegina to Lesvos

If you are heading to Lesvos from Aegina you are making your way to the third largest island in Greece, in the northeastern Aegean close to the Turkish coast. It is the birthplace of Sappho, an island of olive groves, ouzo distilleries and a capital at Mytilini with a Byzantine castle and one of the most enjoyable waterfronts in the northern Aegean.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Lesvos. The most practical ferry approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then board the Piraeus to Lesvos ferry, which runs 4 to 5 times a week and takes around 10 to 14 hours depending on the vessel and the stops. The overnight crossing from Piraeus is the practical option if you want to travel entirely by sea.

Getting there by air

Both Lesvos and Athens have airports. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Mytilini takes around 1 hour in the air. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours and is the most practical approach for most travellers.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and fly to Lesvos. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are travelling with a car, take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and then board the overnight Piraeus to Lesvos ferry, which takes your vehicle and arrives in Mytilini in the morning.
