Getting from Aegina to Volos

If you are heading to Volos from Aegina you are making your way to a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula in Thessaly. It has a long waterfront lined with ouzo bars and seafood restaurants and is the departure point for ferries to the Sporades.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Aegina to Volos. The most practical approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, which takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, and then travel by road north to Volos, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours from Athens by car or KTEL bus.

Getting there by air

Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos, around 20 kilometres from the city, with limited connections from Athens. Taking the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Nea Anchialos is an option but connections are infrequent. The road journey from Athens is often more practical.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Aegina to Piraeus and drive or take the KTEL bus to Volos. The bus from Athens takes around 3.5 hours and is a comfortable and straightforward journey. The train from Athens Larissa station is also a good option, taking around 3.5 to 4 hours through Thessaly. If you are travelling with a car, the ferry from Aegina already puts you at Piraeus with your vehicle, then drive north to Volos via the E75 motorway.
