Getting from Agathonisi to Kythira

If you are heading to Kythira from Agathonisi you are making your way from the northern Dodecanese group to an island at the southern tip of the Peloponnese, between the Aegean and the Ionian seas. It has stone villages, deep gorges, a Venetian castle above Chora and a coastline of turquoise coves.

Take the ferry

There are no direct ferries from Agathonisi to Kythira. Getting there means taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then taking the Piraeus to Kythira ferry, which runs twice a week and takes around 6 to 6.5 hours to the port of Diakofti. Alternatively, fly to Athens, drive to Neapoli on the southern Peloponnese and take the short ferry to Kythira, which runs up to twice daily and takes around 1 hour.

Getting there by air

Kythira has its own small airport with connections from Athens. Taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Kythira, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos and fly to Kythira via Athens. It is the fastest approach. If you are travelling with a car, fly to Athens, drive to Neapoli and take the short ferry across to Kythira from there, which avoids the long Piraeus crossing entirely.
