Getting from Agios Efstratios to Kythira

If you are heading to Kythira from Agios Efstratios you are making your way from a small island in the northern Aegean to an island at the southern tip of the Peloponnese, between the Aegean and the Ionian seas. It has stone villages, deep gorges, a Venetian castle above Chora and a coastline of turquoise coves.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agios Efstratios to Kythira. Getting there means taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, which runs 4 times a week in summer and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, flying to Athens and then taking the Piraeus to Kythira ferry, which runs several times a week and takes around 6 hours 20 minutes to the port of Diakofti. Alternatively, fly to Athens and drive to Neapoli on the southern Peloponnese for the shorter ferry crossing to Kythira.

Getting there by air

Kythira has its own small airport with daily connections from Athens. Taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Kythira takes under 1 hour in the air. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours and is the most practical approach for most travelers. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos and fly to Kythira via Athens. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, fly to Athens, drive to Neapoli and take the short ferry across to Kythira from there, which avoids the long Piraeus crossing entirely.
