Getting from Agistri to Ithaca

If you are heading to Ithaca from Agistri you are making your way from a small pine-covered island in the Saronic Gulf to an island in the Ionian Sea, on the opposite side of Greece. It is the legendary home of Odysseus with a deep central bay at Vathy that is one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the Ionian.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agistri to Ithaca. There are no ferries from Athens to Ithaca directly either. Getting there means taking the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, which takes around 55 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and then traveling by road to Patras for the daily ferry from Patras to Ithaca via Kefalonia, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours. Alternatively, drive or take the bus to Astakos and take the direct ferry to Ithaca from there.

Getting there by air

Ithaca has no airport. The nearest airport is Kefalonia. Taking the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Kefalonia, followed by the short ferry from Sami to Ithaca taking around 20 to 30 minutes, gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, fly to Kefalonia via Athens and take the short ferry across to Ithaca from Sami. It is the most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus and drive to Patras or Astakos for the ferry across to Ithaca.
