Getting from Agistri to Kastellorizo

If you are heading to Kastellorizo from Agistri you are making one of the longer journeys in the Greek island world, from a small pine-covered island in the Saronic Gulf to the easternmost point of Greece, a tiny island just off the Turkish coast with a harbour of neoclassical mansions, the extraordinary Blue Cave and an atmosphere of complete tranquility.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agistri to Kastellorizo. The most practical ferry approach is to take the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, which takes around 55 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and then board the Piraeus to Kastellorizo ferry, which runs 6 times a week and takes around 20 to 22 hours stopping at multiple Dodecanese islands along the way. The total journey takes the better part of two days.

Getting there by air

Kastellorizo has its own small airport with connections from Athens via Rhodes. Taking the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Rhodes and then Rhodes to Kastellorizo gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus and fly to Kastellorizo via Athens and Rhodes. It is the fastest and most practical approach. Give yourself at least two nights on Kastellorizo. The island is small enough to walk around in an afternoon and extraordinary enough to make you want to stay much longer.
