Getting from Agistri to Kavala

If you are heading to Kavala from Agistri you are making your way from a small pine-covered island in the Saronic Gulf to a port city in northern Greece on the Macedonian coast, with a Byzantine castle above the harbour, a Roman aqueduct running through the upper town and the archaeological site of Philippi just 15 kilometres inland.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agistri to Kavala. Getting there by sea means taking the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, which takes around 55 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and then boarding the long Lavrio to Kavala ferry, which takes around 14 to 15 hours and stops at multiple northern Aegean islands along the way. Flying is considerably more practical for most travelers.

Getting there by air

Kavala has its own airport with connections from Athens. Taking the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus, the metro to Athens Airport and flying to Kavala takes around 1 hour in the air. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours and is the most practical approach for most travelers.

Your best option

Take the Saronic ferry from Agistri to Piraeus and fly to Kavala via Athens. It is the fastest and most practical approach. Kavala Airport is around 30 kilometres from the city so factor in a taxi on arrival. If you are planning to visit Thassos from Kavala, ferries to the island run almost hourly in summer and the crossing takes around 1 hour 30 minutes. If you are traveling with a car, the ferry from Agistri already puts you at Piraeus with your vehicle, then drive northeast via the E75 and Egnatia motorway to Kavala, which takes around 7 to 8 hours from Athens.
