Getting from Alexandroupoli to Kefalonia

If you are heading to Kefalonia from Alexandroupoli you are making your way from the far northeastern corner of Greece to the largest of the Ionian islands, on the opposite side of the country. It is mountainous with dramatic cliffs, turquoise bays and some of the finest beaches in Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alexandroupoli to Kefalonia. No Aegean port is connected by sea to any Ionian island. Getting there by ferry means driving to Kyllini on the western Peloponnese and taking the ferry to Kefalonia, which takes around 1 hour 30 minutes and runs up to 4 daily crossings. The drive from Alexandroupoli to Kyllini takes around 10 to 11 hours via the Egnatia motorway and E75.

Getting there by air

Kefalonia has an international airport with connections from Athens and Thessaloniki. Flying from Alexandroupoli to Thessaloniki and then Thessaloniki to Kefalonia avoids Athens entirely and gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours in summer when direct Thessaloniki to Kefalonia flights operate. Otherwise fly via Athens.

Your best option

Fly from Alexandroupoli to Thessaloniki and then fly directly to Kefalonia when the seasonal service is running. Outside summer, fly via Athens. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Alexandroupoli to Kyllini via the Egnatia motorway and E75 and take the ferry across to Kefalonia, though the total drive takes around 10 to 11 hours.
