Getting from Alexandroupoli to Kos

If you are heading to Kos from Alexandroupoli you are making your way from the far northeastern corner of Greece to one of the most popular islands in the Dodecanese group, the birthplace of Hippocrates with good beaches, a lively town and ancient ruins that are among the finest in the eastern Aegean.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alexandroupoli to Kos. Alexandroupoli's ferry connections are limited to Samothrace, Lemnos, Agios Efstratios and Lavrio. Getting to Kos by sea means flying to Athens first and then taking the overnight Piraeus to Kos ferry, which runs daily in summer and takes around 12 to 15 hours. Flying is considerably more practical for most travelers.

Getting there by air

Kos has an international airport with daily connections from Athens and Thessaloniki. Flying from Alexandroupoli to Thessaloniki and then Thessaloniki to Kos avoids Athens entirely and gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours in summer when direct services operate. Otherwise fly via Athens for a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours.

Your best option

Fly from Alexandroupoli to Thessaloniki and then fly directly to Kos when the seasonal service is running. Outside summer, fly via Athens. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Alexandroupoli to Piraeus and board the overnight Piraeus to Kos ferry, which takes your vehicle and arrives in the morning.
