Getting from Alexandroupoli to Samothrace

If you are heading to Samothrace from Alexandroupoli you are making one of the most straightforward island connections in northern Greece, across the water to a wild and extraordinary island rising dramatically from the northeastern Aegean with Mount Fengari at its centre and the Sanctuary of the Great Gods where the Winged Victory of Samothrace was discovered in 1863.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Alexandroupoli to Samothrace running daily in summer and several times a week in winter, taking around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. It is one of the most direct and frequent island connections in northern Greece and the only realistic way to get there. The ferry departs from Alexandroupoli port, which is just 6 kilometres from the airport and easily reached by taxi.

Getting there by air

Samothrace has no airport. The ferry from Alexandroupoli is the only option and at under 2 hours it is one of the most effortless connections in the northern Aegean.

Your best option

Take the direct ferry from Alexandroupoli to Samothrace. With daily departures in summer you can plan around the schedule with ease. Check the ferry times before traveling as the morning departures are the most practical. Samothrace rewards at least three or four nights. Bring good walking shoes and come prepared as facilities on the island are limited.
