Getting from Alexandroupoli to Thassos

If you are heading to Thassos from Alexandroupoli you are making your way to the northernmost island in Greece, in the northern Aegean close to the Macedonian coast and relatively close to Alexandroupoli. It is green and forested with good beaches and ancient ruins from one of the most prosperous cities of the ancient Greek world.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alexandroupoli to Thassos. Thassos is connected only to Kavala and Keramoti on the northern mainland, with ferries running almost hourly in summer and taking around 1 hour 30 minutes from Kavala and around 45 minutes from Keramoti. The drive from Alexandroupoli to Kavala via the Egnatia motorway takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, making this a very straightforward connection.

Getting there by air

Thassos has no airport. The nearest airport is Kavala, around 30 kilometres from the Kavala ferry port. Flying from Alexandroupoli to Kavala and then taking the ferry across to Thassos gives a total journey time of around 2 to 3 hours, though the drive is equally practical given the short distance.

Your best option

Drive from Alexandroupoli to Kavala via the Egnatia motorway and take the ferry across to Thassos. At around 1.5 to 2 hours to Kavala and a further 1 hour 30 minutes on the ferry, the total journey is around 3 hours. It is the most straightforward and practical approach. With ferries running almost hourly from Kavala in summer you rarely need to book the crossing in advance.
