Getting from Alonissos to Meteora

If you are heading to Meteora from Alonissos you are making your way from the most remote of the Sporades group to one of the most extraordinary places in Greece, a complex of Byzantine monasteries built on top of rock pillars in the plain of Thessaly in central Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no ferry to Meteora. It is an inland destination with no sea connection. Getting there from Alonissos means taking the ferry to Volos and then traveling by road to Kalambaka, the town at the base of the Meteora rocks. The drive from Volos to Kalambaka takes around 1.5 to 2 hours via Larissa.

Getting there by air

Meteora has no airport. The nearest town is Kalambaka, around 1.5 to 2 hours by road from Volos. Note that as of 2026 the direct train service between Athens and Kalambaka remains suspended due to track damage. The KTEL bus from Volos to Kalambaka runs several times daily and takes around 2 hours.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos and drive or take the KTEL bus to Kalambaka. At around 1.5 to 2 hours from Volos it is one of the most natural connections from the Sporades to Meteora and avoids going through Athens entirely. If you are traveling with a car, the conventional ferry takes your vehicle to Volos and from there the drive to Kalambaka is straightforward and scenic through the Thessalian plain.
