Getting from Antikythera to Alexandroupoli

If you are heading to Alexandroupoli from Antikythera you are making your way from one of the most remote islands in Greece to the far northeastern corner of the country, a city on the Thracian coast close to the Turkish border and the gateway to Samothrace. The two are about as far apart as it is possible to be within Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Antikythera to Alexandroupoli. Antikythera's ferry connections are limited to Kythira, Piraeus, Kissamos in Crete and occasional ports on the southern Peloponnese. Getting to Alexandroupoli means taking the ferry from Antikythera to Kythira, flying to Athens and then flying to Alexandroupoli, or taking the overnight ferry to Piraeus and driving northeast via the Egnatia motorway, which takes around 8 to 9 hours from Athens.

Getting there by air

Alexandroupoli has its own airport with connections from Athens. Antikythera has no airport, only a helipad. Taking the ferry from Antikythera to Kythira, flying to Athens and then Athens to Alexandroupoli takes around 1 hour 10 minutes on the second leg. Total journey time is around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Antikythera to Kythira, fly to Athens and then fly to Alexandroupoli. It is the fastest and most practical approach. If you are planning to visit Samothrace from Alexandroupoli, ferries to the island depart daily in summer and take around 1 hour 45 minutes. If you are traveling with a car, take the overnight ferry from Antikythera to Piraeus and drive northeast via the Egnatia motorway to Alexandroupoli.
