Getting from Astakos to Agathonisi

If you are heading to Agathonisi from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to one of the most remote islands in the Dodecanese group, on the opposite side of the country. It has almost no tourist infrastructure and an atmosphere of complete isolation.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Astakos to Agathonisi. Astakos ferry connections are limited to Kefalonia and Ithaca. Getting to Agathonisi means driving from Astakos to Athens, which takes around 3.5 hours, and then flying to Leros or Samos, followed by the local ferry to Agathonisi, which runs 3 to 5 times a week and takes around 1 to 2 hours.

Getting there by air

Agathonisi has no airport. The nearest airports are Leros and Samos. Astakos has no airport either. Driving from Astakos to Athens and flying to Leros or Samos, followed by the local ferry to Agathonisi, gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Astakos to Athens, fly to Leros or Samos and take the local ferry across to Agathonisi. Check the ferry schedule before booking your flights as the service runs a limited number of times per week. Build flexibility into your plans as Agathonisi is not the easiest island to leave in a hurry.
