Getting from Astakos to Ioannina

If you are heading to Ioannina from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to a city in the mountains of Epirus in northwestern Greece, on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis with the Pindos range behind it and the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest in the world, an hour away.

Take the ferry

There is no ferry to Ioannina. It is an inland city with no sea connection. Getting there from Astakos means driving northeast via Agrinio and the E65 motorway to Ioannina, which takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. It is one of the most natural and direct connections from Astakos given the geographic proximity on the western Greek mainland.

Getting there by air

Ioannina has its own airport with connections from Athens. Astakos has no airport either. Driving from Astakos to Ioannina takes around 2 to 2.5 hours and is considerably more practical than flying for this mainland connection. The airport is just 4 kilometres from the city centre.

Your best option

Drive from Astakos northeast to Ioannina via Agrinio and the E65 motorway. It is the most direct and natural approach and avoids Athens entirely. At around 2 to 2.5 hours it is one of the shorter and more straightforward connections from Astakos on the western Greek mainland. If you prefer not to drive, take the KTEL bus from Astakos to Ioannina, which runs via Agrinio and takes a similar time.
