Getting from Astakos to Nafplio

If you are heading to Nafplio from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to a neoclassical town on the Argolic Gulf in the Peloponnese, the first capital of modern Greece with the Venetian fortress of Palamidi above it and Mycenae, Epidaurus and Tiryns all within easy reach.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Astakos to Nafplio. Astakos ferry connections are limited to Kefalonia and Ithaca. Nafplio is accessible only by road. Getting there means driving south from Astakos through the Peloponnese to Nafplio, which takes around 4 to 4.5 hours via Patras, Corinth and the Argolic Gulf. It is a straightforward road journey that avoids Athens entirely.

Getting there by air

Nafplio has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Astakos has no airport either. Driving from Astakos south through the Peloponnese to Nafplio via Patras and Corinth is considerably more practical than flying for this connection and avoids Athens entirely. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Astakos south through the Peloponnese to Nafplio via Patras and Corinth. At around 4 to 4.5 hours it avoids Athens entirely and is the most direct road approach. Nafplio is an excellent base for exploring Mycenae, Epidaurus and Tiryns, all within easy reach by car. If you prefer to go via Athens, the KTEL bus from Athens Kifissos terminal runs several times daily to Nafplio and takes around 2.5 hours.
