Getting from Athens to Fournoi
If you are heading to Fournoi from Athens you are going to one of the finest fishing island complexes in the Aegean and one of the least visited. Fournoi sits between Ikaria and Samos in the eastern Aegean, a cluster of small islands where the main settlement is a working fishing village with excellent seafood, quiet beaches and almost no tourist infrastructure. The waters around Fournoi are extraordinarily productive and the fish tavernas along the harbour are among the best in the eastern Aegean. It is the kind of place that rewards people who have already done the obvious islands and want something genuinely different.
Take the ferry
Fournoi is connected to Piraeus by Blue Star Ferries three times a week, with the crossing taking around 9 to 11 hours. The island is also connected by local ferry to Ikaria, taking around 20 to 55 minutes, and to Samos, taking around 1 hour. The Piraeus direct service is the most practical approach if you want to travel entirely by sea, though the once or twice weekly frequency means planning carefully around departure days.
Getting there by air
Fournoi has no airport. The nearest airports are Ikaria and Samos, both of which have daily connections from Athens. Flying to Ikaria and then taking the short local ferry across to Fournoi gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours and is the most time efficient approach. The Ikaria to Fournoi crossing takes under an hour and runs daily in summer.
Your best option
Fly to Ikaria via Athens and take the ferry across to Fournoi. Check the schedule on Ferryhopper before booking your flights and plan your Ikaria arrival around the afternoon departure. Give yourself at least two nights on Fournoi and come prepared as facilities on the island are limited.
