Getting from Athens to Lavrio

If you are heading to Lavrio from Athens you are making your way to the port closest to Athens Airport and the departure point for ferries to Kea, Kythnos and several other Cycladic islands. Lavrio sits on the southeastern tip of Attica, around 60 kilometres from central Athens and around 35 kilometres from the airport. The ancient silver mines nearby financed the Athenian fleet that defeated the Persians at Salamis in 480 BC and are worth a visit if you have time. The town has a working port atmosphere and a waterfront of fish restaurants that are considerably better than the port's reputation suggests.

Getting there by air

Lavrio has no airport of its own. Athens International Airport is around 35 kilometres to the northwest and the two are connected by KTEL bus, taking around 30 to 40 minutes and running frequently throughout the day. This is the most important connection for travellers using Lavrio as a ferry hub directly from the airport.

Take the train, bus or drive

The drive from central Athens to Lavrio takes around 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic via the Attiki Odos motorway and the coastal road south through Sounio. The KTEL bus from central Athens runs to Lavrio taking around 1.5 to 2 hours. There is no train service to Lavrio.

Take the ferry

There is no ferry from Athens to Lavrio. Lavrio is the ferry port itself and the departure point for connections to Kea, Kythnos and seasonal connections to several other Cycladic islands and northern Aegean destinations.

Your best option

If you are coming from Athens Airport, take the KTEL bus directly to Lavrio. It is fast, inexpensive and drops you close to the ferry terminal, making it the most efficient connection for anyone heading to Kea or Kythnos without crossing the city to Piraeus. If you are coming from central Athens, drive or take the bus south along the Attica coast.
