Getting from Chios to Athens
If you are heading to Athens from Chios you are making your way from one of the most overlooked islands in the northeastern Aegean to the capital of Greece and the gateway to everything it connects to.
Take the ferry
There is a direct overnight ferry from Chios to Piraeus running around 3 times a week, taking around 9 hours. It is a comfortable connection with cabins available and arrives in the morning. From Piraeus the metro takes around 20 minutes to central Athens. It is a long journey compared to flying but a good option if you are traveling with a car or prefer to travel by sea.
Getting there by air
Chios has its own airport with daily connections from Athens. The flight takes around 35 to 40 minutes and is the most practical approach for most travelers. Total journey time from airport to city centre is around 2 to 3 hours including transfer from Athens Airport.
Your best option
Fly from Chios to Athens. At around 35 to 40 minutes in the air it is the fastest and most practical approach by a significant margin. If you are in no hurry or are traveling with a car, the overnight ferry from Chios to Piraeus is comfortable, saves a night's accommodation and delivers you to the port in the morning with the day ahead. The conventional ferry is the only realistic option for travelers with a vehicle as it takes your car directly to Piraeus port.
