Getting from Chios to Patras

If you are heading to Patras from Chios you are making your way from one of the most overlooked islands in the northeastern Aegean to the third largest city in Greece on the southern shore of the Gulf of Corinth, the main gateway to the Ionian islands and western Europe.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Chios to Patras. Getting there by sea means taking the overnight Chios to Piraeus ferry, which runs around 3 times a week and takes around 9 hours, and then taking the KTEL bus or driving west to Patras, which takes around 2 to 2.5 hours from Athens via the E65 motorway. The total journey takes the better part of two days.

Getting there by air

Patras has a small seasonal airport at Araxos, around 40 kilometres from the city, operating limited flights from May to October only. The most practical approach is to fly from Chios to Athens and then take the KTEL bus or drive to Patras. Total journey time is around 5 to 6 hours. Chios has its own airport with daily connections from Athens.

Your best option

Fly from Chios to Athens and take the KTEL bus to Patras. The bus from Athens Kifissos terminal runs frequently and takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. If you are traveling with a car, take the overnight ferry from Chios to Piraeus and drive west to Patras via the E65 motorway.
