Getting from Chios to Samos
If you are heading to Samos from Chios you are making your way from one of the most overlooked islands in the northeastern Aegean to a neighbouring island in the same part of the sea, just a short distance to the south. It is green and mountainous with wine production dating back to antiquity and the UNESCO-listed Heraion sanctuary.
Take the ferry
There is a direct ferry from Chios to Samos running several times a week in summer, taking around 2 to 3 hours depending on the vessel and route. It is the most natural sea connection between the two islands and keeps the journey within the northeastern Aegean without going through Athens or Piraeus. Samos has two main ports, Vathy and Karlovassi, so check which port your ferry arrives at before booking accommodation.
Getting there by air
Samos has an international airport with connections from Athens. Chios has its own airport with daily connections from Athens. Flying from Chios to Athens and then Athens to Samos takes around 1 hour on the second leg. Total journey time is around 4 to 5 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the direct ferry from Chios to Samos. It is the most natural and enjoyable connection and keeps the journey entirely within the northeastern Aegean without going through Athens. Check the schedule before traveling as the service runs a limited number of times per week. If you need to travel more frequently than the ferry allows, fly from Chios to Athens and then fly to Samos.
