Getting from Crete to Aegina

If you are heading to Aegina from Crete you are going to the closest of the Saronic islands to Athens, a proper working island with a handsome harbour town, the remarkably preserved Temple of Aphaia on a pine-covered hill above the sea and pistachio groves that produce some of the finest pistachios in Greece.

 

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Crete to Aegina. The island is connected to Piraeus by the Saronic ferry network, with around 20 daily departures and the trip taking around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. Getting to Piraeus from Crete means taking the overnight ferry from Heraklion, making the total journey by sea the better part of a day.

 

Getting there by air

Aegina has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Flying from Crete to Athens takes around 50 minutes and then the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Aegina takes around 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. Total travel time is around 3 to 4 hours.

 

Your best option

Fly to Athens and take the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Aegina. With around 20 daily departures the connection is one of the most effortless in Greece. Turn up at Piraeus, buy a ticket and get on the next boat.
