Getting from Crete to Alexandroupoli

If you are heading to Alexandroupoli from Crete you are making your way to the far northeastern corner of Greece, a city on the Thracian coast close to the Turkish border that serves as the gateway to Samothrace and the surrounding region of Thrace, one of the most fascinating and least visited parts of the country.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Crete to Alexandroupoli. The city is a northern Aegean mainland port with no connection to the southern Aegean ferry network. Flying is the only practical option.

Getting there by air

Both Crete and Alexandroupoli have airports. Flying from Crete to Athens takes around 50 minutes and then Athens to Alexandroupoli takes around 1 hour 15 minutes, giving a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours. A direct Heraklion to Alexandroupoli service may be available seasonally so check before routing through Athens.

Your best option

Fly via Athens or direct if the seasonal service is available. If you are planning to visit Samothrace from Alexandroupoli, ferries to the island depart from the port daily in summer with the trip taking around 1 hour 45 minutes.
