Getting from Crete to Kastellorizo

If you are heading to Kastellorizo from Crete you are making one of the longer journeys in the Greek island world, to the easternmost point of Greece, a tiny island of around 500 people sitting just a few hundred metres off the Turkish coast near Kas. The harbour is lined with neoclassical mansions painted in deep reds and ochres, the Blue Cave on the southern coast is one of the finest sea caves in the Mediterranean and the island has an atmosphere of complete tranquility that is almost impossible to find anywhere else in Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Crete to Kastellorizo. An indirect connection exists via Rhodes but the total journey by sea takes the better part of two days and is not a realistic option. Flying is the only practical choice.

Getting there by air

Kastellorizo has its own small airport with connections from Athens via Rhodes. Flying from Crete to Athens takes around 50 minutes, then Athens to Rhodes takes around 1 hour and Rhodes to Kastellorizo takes around 30 minutes. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours.

Your best option

Fly via Athens and Rhodes. It is the only realistic approach for most travellers. Give yourself at least two nights on Kastellorizo. The island is small enough to walk around in an afternoon and extraordinary enough to make you want to stay much longer.
