Getting from Crete to Lemnos

If you are heading to Lemnos from Crete you are going to one of the most rewarding and most overlooked islands in the northern Aegean, a large volcanic island of rolling hills, wetlands and long sandy beaches with a capital at Myrina that has a Byzantine castle above the harbour and some of the best Muscat wine in Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Crete to Lemnos. The connection goes via Piraeus or Lavrio, with the ferry from Lavrio to Lemnos taking around 9 hours and running three times a week. Getting to either port from Crete means flying to Athens first. The total journey by sea takes the better part of two days and flying is the only realistic option for most travellers.

Getting there by air

Both Crete and Lemnos have airports. Flying from Crete to Athens takes around 50 minutes and then Athens to Lemnos takes around 1 hour, giving a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Fly to Lemnos via Athens. It is the only realistic approach and the connection is straightforward. Lemnos Airport is around 22 kilometres from Myrina so factor in a taxi or transfer on arrival.
