Getting from Mykonos to Alexandroupoli
Alexandroupoli sits at the far northeastern edge of Greece, where the country meets the Turkish border and the Evros river delta stretches out into the Thrace coastline. It is the largest city in Western Thrace and the kind of place that most visitors to Greece never reach, which gives it a character and an authenticity that is hard to find in more touristed parts of the country. The port is the soul of the city, lined with restaurants and cafes with the lighthouse sitting at the end of the waterfront. It is also the gateway to Samothrace, one of the most dramatic and unspoilt islands in the Aegean.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Mykonos to Alexandroupoli. Getting there by sea means taking the ferry from Mykonos to Piraeus and then travelling by land across northern Greece, which is a very long journey. The drive from Athens to Alexandroupoli on the Egnatia Odos motorway takes around 8 to 9 hours. The KTEL bus covers the same route and there are also train connections from Thessaloniki. For most people flying is the only practical option on this route.
What about flying?
Both Mykonos and Alexandroupoli have airports so flying is the obvious choice here. The journey goes Mykonos to Athens and then Athens to Alexandroupoli, with total travel time around 3 to 4 hours door to door depending on your connection. Alexandroupoli Airport is close to the city centre and connected to Athens with regular domestic flights. Book ahead as the route has limited capacity.
Your best option
Fly without question. The distance makes every other option impractical for most travellers. Once you are there, the ferry from Alexandroupoli to Samothrace takes around 2 hours and runs regularly through the summer if you are continuing to the island.
