Getting from Mykonos to Kalymnos

Kalymnos has a character that sets it apart from most of the Dodecanese. It is the sponge diving island, a tradition that shaped the culture here for generations and still defines how the place feels today. The main town of Pothia is one of the most colourful ports in the Aegean, the interior is rugged and mountainous, and the island has become one of the top rock climbing destinations in Europe thanks to the limestone cliffs around Telendos. It is not a beach holiday island in the conventional sense and that is what makes it interesting.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry between Mykonos and Kalymnos. The connection goes via Piraeus and the total journey by sea is around 10 to 12 hours depending on the service and the stops along the way. Kalymnos is part of the main Dodecanese route so ferries stop there regularly, making it a natural part of an island hopping itinerary if you are working your way down the chain. If you are travelling specifically from Mykonos to Kalymnos, flying is the faster option.

What about flying?

Kalymnos has its own airport and Mykonos has an airport so flying is an option here. The journey goes Mykonos to Athens and then Athens to Kalymnos, with the total travel time around 3 to 4 hours door to door. Kalymnos Airport is small and flight frequency is limited so check availability well in advance and book early.

Your best option

Fly if the schedule works. Kalymnos rewards exploration and arriving with time and energy to spare makes a difference. Rent a scooter or a car, get up into the mountains, take the short boat across to Telendos in the afternoon and eat at one of the fish tavernas on the waterfront in Pothia in the evening. It is an island that reveals itself slowly and it is better for it.
