Getting from Mykonos to Andros

So you're heading from Mykonos to Andros. Andros is the northernmost island in the Cyclades and one of the least touristy despite being one of the largest. It has a quiet confidence about it, a wealthy Greek island in the best sense, with beautiful neoclassical architecture in the main town, excellent contemporary art museums, serious hiking trails and a coastline that goes largely uncrowded even in the peak of summer. It attracts Greeks who know their islands well and visitors who have moved past the obvious choices.

Take the ferry

Ferries between Mykonos and Andros run through the summer season and the crossing takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. Andros is served primarily from Rafina on the mainland rather than Piraeus, so some routes may connect via Rafina rather than running as a pure island to island service. Check the schedule carefully and book ahead once you find a crossing that works for your dates.

What about flying?

Andros does not have an airport so flying is not an option on this route. The ferry is your only way in. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.

Your best option

Take the ferry and give Andros the time it deserves. The main town of Chora is one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades and almost nobody talks about it. Walk out to the clifftop path, visit the Museum of Contemporary Art and eat at one of the tavernas overlooking the sea. Andros is the kind of island discovery that makes you feel like you have found something most people missed.
