Getting from Mykonos to Koufonisia
So you're heading from Mykonos to Koufonisia. Koufonisia has quietly become one of the most talked about islands in the Cyclades over the last few years and anyone who has been there understands why. It is tiny, the beaches are extraordinary, the water is a colour that does not look real and the main village has a warmth and energy that bigger islands spend a lot of money trying to manufacture. It has got busier in recent years but it has not lost what makes it special. If you have not been, this is one of the better decisions you will make in Greece.
Take the ferry
Koufonisia is part of the Small Cyclades group and is served by ferries through the summer season. The crossing from Mykonos takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on the service and the stops along the way. Ferries are less frequent than the main Cyclades routes so check the timetable carefully before fixing your dates. Koufonisia has become popular enough that boats fill up in July and August so book your tickets as soon as you have your dates confirmed.
What about flying?
Koufonisia does not have an airport so flying is not an option on this route. The ferry is your only way in. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.
Your best option
Take the ferry and stay at least three or four days. Koufonisia is one of those islands that gets better the longer you are there. The beaches on the southern coast, the evening in the village, the boat trips to the neighbouring islands. Give it time and it will give you a lot back.
