Getting from Mykonos to Sikinos

So you're heading from Mykonos to Sikinos. Sikinos is one of the smallest and least visited islands in the Cyclades and it has stayed that way because getting there takes a bit of effort. There are no big hotels, no nightlife and no crowds. What it does have is a beautiful fortified village sitting high above the sea, a monastery built on the ruins of a Roman temple and a pace of life that feels completely removed from the more famous islands nearby. People who find Sikinos tend to come back.

Take the ferry

Direct ferries run between Mykonos and Sikinos through the summer season and the crossing takes around 3 to 4 hours. Sikinos is one of the quieter islands in the Cyclades so the ferry schedule is limited. There will not be a crossing every day so check the timetable carefully before you fix your dates and book as soon as you find a departure that works.

What about flying?

Sikinos does not have an airport so flying is not an option on this route. The ferry is your only way in. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.

Your best option

Take the ferry and stay long enough to actually feel the island. Sikinos is not somewhere you pass through. The walk up to Chorio in the evening, the silence, the view back down to the port below. It is the kind of Greek island experience that is getting harder to find and worth every hour it takes to get there.
