Getting from Mykonos to Kasos

Heading to Kasos puts you in rare company. It is the southernmost island in the Dodecanese, sitting between Karpathos and Crete, and one of the least visited islands in Greece despite being inhabited and fully functioning. There are no resorts, no tourist infrastructure to speak of and the handful of visitors who make it there each summer tend to be Greeks visiting family or travellers who have specifically sought it out. The island has a proud seafaring history, a quiet main town called Fry and a landscape that is raw and largely untouched. It is not for everyone but for the right person it is exactly right.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry between Mykonos and Kasos. The connection goes via Piraeus and given the distance this is one of the longest ferry journeys you can do in Greece, somewhere around 18 to 20 hours in total. Kasos is also served by ferries on the Rhodes to Crete route which can make it part of a longer southern Dodecanese itinerary. For most travellers flying is the far more practical option on this route.

What about flying?

Kasos has its own small airport which makes flying possible. The journey goes Mykonos to Athens and then Athens to Kasos, with total travel time around 3 to 4 hours door to door. Flights to Kasos are limited and seats are scarce in peak season so check availability early and book as soon as you have your dates confirmed. Olympic Air operates this route and it is worth checking their schedule directly.

Your best option

Fly. The distance makes the ferry impractical for most travellers and the small airport on Kasos exists precisely because the island needs it. Go with no fixed agenda, let the island set the pace and appreciate the fact that you are somewhere very few people make the effort to reach.
