Getting from Mykonos to Amorgos

So you're heading from Mykonos to Amorgos. Amorgos is one of the most dramatic islands in the Cyclades. It is long and narrow, the interior is mountainous, and the famous Hozoviotissa Monastery is built directly into a cliff face hundreds of metres above the sea. It sits at the far eastern edge of the Cyclades, further out than most people venture, and that distance is what has kept it the way it is. If you have seen The Big Blue, you already know what Amorgos looks like. If you have not, you are in for something special.

Take the ferry

Direct ferries run between Mykonos and Amorgos through the summer season and the crossing takes around 3 to 4 hours depending on the service. Amorgos has two ports, Katapola in the west and Aegiali in the north, so check which port your ferry is heading to before you book as it affects where you end up on the island. Departures are less frequent than the more central Cyclades routes so check the schedule carefully and book ahead once you find a crossing that suits your plans.

What about flying?

Amorgos does not have an airport so flying is not an option on this route. The ferry is your only way in. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.

Your best option

Take the ferry and commit to a proper stay. Amorgos rewards the people who give it time. Walk the path to the monastery early in the morning before the heat sets in, swim at Agia Anna beach below it and stay long enough to get out to Aegiali and the villages in the north. It is one of the finest islands in Greece and not enough people make it out this far.
