Getting from Mykonos to Patras
Patras is Greece's third largest city and sits on the northern coast of the Peloponnese overlooking the Gulf of Patras. Most people pass through rather than stop, and that is understandable given what surrounds it, but the city has more going for it than its reputation as a transit hub suggests. The castle above the city is one of the best preserved Byzantine fortresses in Greece, the carnival held here every February is the largest in the country and the Rio-Antirrio bridge connecting the Peloponnese to central Greece is one of the more impressive pieces of engineering you will see. For most travellers Patras is the jumping off point for the Ionian islands or the gateway to Italy by ferry.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Mykonos to Patras. Take the ferry from Mykonos to Piraeus, which takes around 2.5 to 5 hours depending on the vessel, and then travel by land from Athens to Patras. The journey from Athens takes around 2.5 hours by car on the E65 motorway or around 3 hours by bus from the Kifissos terminal.
What about flying?
Flying Mykonos to Athens and then Athens to Araxos Airport, which serves Patras and sits around 40 kilometres from the city centre, is another option. From Araxos you would need a car or taxi into Patras. Check availability on the Athens to Araxos route as it is not as frequently served as the main Greek domestic airports.
Your best option
Fly to Athens and either drive or take the bus to Patras. It is the most straightforward approach and the road west from Athens along the Gulf of Corinth is a good one. If you are continuing to the Ionian islands, ferries to Kefalonia and Ithaca run from Patras port regularly and you can connect the same day.
