Getting from Mykonos to Kalamata
You're heading to the southern Peloponnese, which means leaving the islands behind for a bit and stepping into a completely different side of Greece. Kalamata is the capital of Messinia and one of the most liveable cities in the country. It has a long seafront, a thriving food scene built around some of the best olives and olive oil in the world, a restored castle above the old town and easy access to some extraordinary destinations nearby including the Mani peninsula, the ancient site of Messene and the beaches of the outer Messinian coast. It is a proper Greek city that happens to be surrounded by incredible things.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry between Mykonos and Kalamata. Your options are flying or making your way to the Peloponnese overland from Athens.
What about flying?
Both Mykonos and Kalamata have airports so flying is a straightforward option on this route. The journey goes Mykonos to Athens and then Athens to Kalamata, with total travel time around 3 to 4 hours door to door depending on your connection. Kalamata Airport is well connected in summer with both domestic and international flights so check availability and book ahead once you have your dates confirmed.
Drive or bus from Athens
If you are already passing through Athens, driving to Kalamata is a good option. The journey from Athens takes around 3 to 3.5 hours on the E65 motorway through the Peloponnese and the drive itself is scenic once you get past Corinth. KTEL buses also run regularly between Athens and Kalamata for those who prefer not to drive, with the journey taking around 3.5 to 4 hours from the Kifissos bus terminal in Athens.
Your best option
Fly if you are coming directly from Mykonos and time is a factor. If you have flexibility and are already in Athens, the drive down through the Peloponnese is worth doing. The road takes you past Corinth, through the mountains and down into Messinia and it sets the tone for the region beautifully.
