Getting from Mykonos to Astakos

Astakos is a small port town on the western coast of central Greece and one of those places that almost nobody visits intentionally. It exists primarily as a ferry departure point for Kefalonia and Ithaca, two of the Ionian islands, and serves travellers who are heading to those islands from central Greece rather than from Patras or Kylini further south. The town sits on a quiet bay with a small harbour and a local pace of life that has nothing to do with tourism. If you are heading here, you are almost certainly connecting onwards to the Ionian islands.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Mykonos to Astakos. The practical route is to take the ferry from Mykonos to Piraeus and then travel by road to Astakos. The drive from Athens takes around 3.5 to 4 hours heading northwest through central Greece on the E65 motorway. From Astakos, Ionion Pelagos operates ferries to Kefalonia (Sami port) and Ithaca, with crossings taking around 2 to 2.5 hours.

What about flying?

Astakos does not have an airport. The nearest airport is Athens, around 280 kilometres to the southeast. Flying from Mykonos to Athens and then travelling by road to Astakos is the fastest overall option but still a significant journey. If you are heading to Kefalonia or Ithaca, flying directly to Kefalonia via Athens and skipping Astakos altogether may be a more practical approach depending on your plans.

Your best option

If Astakos is your destination or connection point, fly to Athens and rent a car for the drive west. If you are using Astakos to connect to the Ionian islands and are not bringing a vehicle, it is worth comparing the Astakos ferry route against flying directly to Kefalonia or Ithaca via Athens, which may save you several hours of road travel.
