Getting from Mykonos to Heraklion

Heraklion is the capital of Crete and the largest city on the island, which means arriving here gives you immediate access to everything. The Palace of Knossos is a short drive from the port, the Archaeological Museum is one of the finest in Greece, the Venetian harbour and fortress are right in the centre of the city and the rest of Crete spreads out in every direction from here. It is a proper city with a real urban energy that surprises people who arrive expecting a quieter island pace.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry between Mykonos and Heraklion and it is a good option on this route. SeaJets, Fast Ferries and Minoan Lines all operate the crossing through the summer season, with up to 2 daily departures at peak times. The journey takes around 4.5 to 5.5 hours depending on the operator and vessel. The route runs seasonally from April to October so check availability if you are travelling outside those months. Book ahead in summer, this is a popular crossing and seats go fast.

What about flying?

Both Mykonos and Heraklion have airports so flying is an option on this route. The journey goes Mykonos to Athens and then Athens to Heraklion, with total travel time around 3 to 4 hours door to door depending on your connection. Heraklion Airport is close to the city centre and well connected year round. For a crossing of this distance the flight and the ferry are comparable in total travel time so it comes down to preference and price.

Your best option

If you enjoy the sea the direct ferry is a great way to do this route. The crossing takes you south through the Cyclades and the approach into Heraklion port is a good arrival. If you prefer to fly the Athens connection is straightforward. Either way, arrive into Heraklion with at least two or three days to spend there before heading out to explore the rest of Crete.
