Getting from Mykonos to Oinousses
So you're heading to Oinousses, a small archipelago of nine islands off the northeastern coast of Chios, only one of which is permanently inhabited. The families who come from here have historically produced some of the most powerful shipping dynasties in the world and the wealth that generated is visible in the grand mansions lining the waterfront of the main village. Despite that prosperity it is a quiet, unhurried island with a Naval Academy, a maritime museum and a character that is entirely its own. Very few foreign visitors make it here and the island absorbs the ones who do without any fuss.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry between Mykonos and Oinousses. The most practical route is to take the direct ferry from Mykonos to Chios, which runs regularly through the summer season and takes around 3 to 4 hours, and then hop across to Oinousses on the local daily ferry from Chios port. That crossing takes around 1 hour. Check the return schedule from Oinousses before you commit to your dates as the service runs once a day.
What about flying?
Oinousses does not have an airport so flying directly to the island is not an option. The nearest airport is Chios, which is your gateway to Oinousses however you approach it. The journey from Mykonos goes Mykonos to Athens, Athens to Chios, and then the local ferry across to Oinousses. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.
Your best option
Take the direct ferry from Mykonos to Chios and then hop across to Oinousses on the daily local boat. Stay at least two nights, the once daily boat means your schedule needs to work around the ferry rather than the other way around. Walk the waterfront in the evening, visit the maritime museum and take the time to understand what makes this small island such an outsized part of Greek shipping history.
