Getting from Mykonos to Santorini

So you're heading from Mykonos to Santorini. This is one of the most travelled routes in the Greek islands and it is easy to see why. Both islands are in the heart of the Cyclades, they are close to each other, and the ferry ride between them on a sunny day is one of those experiences that makes you realise you are exactly where you are supposed to be.

Unlike a lot of Greek island routes, this one does not require any planning around connections or stopovers. It is a direct hop and the options are simple.

Take the ferry

This is how the vast majority of people do this route and it is the right call. Fast ferries run directly between Mykonos and Santorini through the summer season and the crossing takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. Slower ferries are also available but take closer to 5 hours and there is really no reason to choose them on a route this short. SeaJets and Hellenic Seaways are the main operators. If you are travelling in July or August book your tickets well in advance. This is one of the busiest ferry crossings in Greece and seats go fast.

What about flying?

There are no direct flights between Mykonos and Santorini. If you want to fly you are routing through Athens, which means a flight to Athens, a wait, and then a second flight to Santorini. Door to door you are looking at 4 to 5 hours compared to 2.5 on the ferry, and it will cost you considerably more. It does not make sense on this route for most people.

Your best option

Take the fast ferry. Book it early, get yourself a spot on the outside deck, and enjoy the crossing. The scenery between the Cyclades islands is remarkable and this is one of those journeys where the getting there is as good as the arriving.
