Getting from Mykonos to Sifnos

So you're heading from Mykonos to Sifnos. Another excellent call. Sifnos has a loyal following among people who have been coming to Greece for years and it is not hard to understand why. Great food, beautiful hiking trails, pottery villages and a laid back atmosphere that feels earned rather than manufactured. It sits a bit further west in the Cyclades than the main tourist trail which is exactly what keeps it the way it is.

The route is direct and manageable, just not one of the shorter crossings.

Take the ferry

Direct ferries run between Mykonos and Sifnos through the summer season and the crossing takes around 3 to 4 hours. Like Folegandros, Sifnos is a quieter island so departures are less frequent than the busier routes in the Cyclades. Check the schedule carefully before locking in your travel dates as there may not be a daily crossing depending on when you are going. Once you find a departure that works, book it. The boats to the less visited islands fill up more than people expect.

What about flying?

Sifnos does not have an airport so flying is not an option on this route. The ferry is your only way in and given the character of the island that feels like the right way to arrive anyway.

Your best option

Take the ferry and give yourself enough time on the island to make the crossing worthwhile. Sifnos is not a one night stop. The food alone is worth staying for and the hiking between the villages is some of the best in the Cyclades. Get there, slow down, and stay longer than you planned.
