Getting from Mykonos to Volos

You're heading to one of the most underrated cities in Greece. Volos sits at the foot of Mount Pelion on the Pagasetic Gulf and has a character that is entirely its own. It is a university city with a strong café culture, a waterfront lined with ouzo bars serving the local speciality of spicy meze, and a proximity to the Pelion peninsula that gives it access to some of the most beautiful villages and beaches in mainland Greece. It is also the gateway to the Sporades islands which makes it a natural stop for anyone island hopping through that part of the Aegean.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry between Mykonos and Volos. Your options are flying into the nearest airport and making your way to the city, or travelling via Athens overland.

What about flying?

Volos does not have its own commercial airport. The nearest option is flying into Thessaloniki and driving down, which takes around 2.5 hours, or flying into Athens and driving up through central Greece, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours. Neither is a direct connection but both are manageable depending on which direction you are coming from.

Drive or bus from Athens

If you are passing through Athens, driving to Volos is a solid option. The journey takes around 3 to 3.5 hours on the E75 motorway heading north through Lamia. KTEL buses also run regularly between Athens and Volos from the Liossion terminal, with the journey taking around 4 hours. It is a straightforward route and the road north through central Greece is pleasant once you clear the city.

Your best option

Fly to Athens and either drive or take the bus up to Volos. It adds a leg to the journey but it is manageable and if you have the time, renting a car in Athens and driving up gives you the flexibility to explore the Pelion peninsula properly once you arrive. Volos is best used as a base rather than a destination in itself and having a car makes all the difference.
