Getting from Santorini to Sifnos

Sifnos has a reputation in Greece that is well out of proportion to its size. It is known above all for its food, a tradition of pottery and cooking that has made it one of the most respected gastronomic destinations in the Cyclades. The capital Apollonia is a cluster of white villages on a ridge with views in both directions. The medieval castle of Kastro sits above the sea on the eastern coast with a warren of lanes and churches inside the walls. The beaches at Platis Gialos and Faros are excellent. The island has a devoted following among Greeks and increasingly among international visitors who have worked their way past the obvious Cyclades and want something with more substance.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Santorini to Sifnos year-round, operated by Seajets and Fast Ferries, running daily in summer with up to 17 crossings per week in peak season and 3 to 4 per week in the low season. The fastest Seajets catamaran covers the route in around 2 hours 50 minutes. Most sailings stop at Folegandros and Milos along the way, which adds some time but makes the crossing a scenic one through the southern Cyclades. Book ahead in July and August as this is a popular route.

What about flying?

Sifnos has no airport. The ferry from Santorini is the only realistic option and at under 3 hours on the fast boat it is one of the better island hops in the western Cyclades.

Your best option

Take the ferry. Check the schedule on Ferryhopper and note which sailings stop at Folegandros and Milos if you want the faster crossing. The direct Seajets service at around 2 hours 50 minutes is the one to look for.
