Getting from Spetses to Hydra
If you are heading to Hydra from Spetses you are making your way from one car-free island in the Saronic Gulf to another, just a short distance to the northeast. It has elegant stone mansions above the port, exceptionally clear water and a quality of silence unlike anywhere else within easy reach of Athens.
Take the ferry
There is a direct ferry from Spetses to Hydra running several times daily as part of the Saronic island circuit, taking around 30 to 60 minutes. It is one of the most natural and effortless island hops in Greece and runs year-round making it a reliable connection at any time of year. No advance booking is needed for most of the year.
Getting there by air
Hydra has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Spetses has no airport. The nearest airport is also Athens. The direct ferry from Spetses to Hydra is by far the most practical connection given the crossing time of around 30 to 60 minutes. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the direct ferry from Spetses to Hydra. It is the most natural and effortless connection between the two islands and runs year-round. The arrival into Hydra port with the mansions rising above the waterfront and the donkeys waiting on the quayside is one of the best in Greece. Both Spetses and Hydra are car-free so the transition feels entirely natural and no vehicles need to be considered for this connection.
