About Alkistis Protopsalti

Early Life

Alkistis Protopsalti, born Alkistis-Sevasti Attikiouzeloglou on October 18, 1954, in Alexandria, Egypt, moved with her family to Athens at age six after political upheaval forced Greek families to leave Egypt. Her parents lost their home, medical practice, and social circle in the move, settling first in Ymittos, then Kallithea, and finally Nea Smyrni. At eleven, she lost her father, a loss she has described as the moment she first understood what life meant. Her first job was as a tour guide at archaeological sites, where she would sing for tourists on the bus rides back, and she was also drawn toward a potential career in sports before friends convinced her to audition for composer Dimos Moutsis.

Musical Style & Sound

Protopsalti performs modern éntekhno, a genre rooted in setting Greek poetry to orchestral and folk-influenced composition. Her early work set the poetry of Nobel laureates George Seferis and Odysseas Elytis to music, giving her catalog a literary foundation distinct from more commercial Greek pop. Over a career spanning five decades, she has collaborated with many of Greece's most significant composers, including Mikis Theodorakis, Dimos Moutsis, Stamatis Kraounakis, Giannis Spanos, and Stavros Xarhakos, as well as international composer Goran Bregović.

Career Rise

Protopsalti passed her audition with Moutsis and made her first professional appearances in 1975, going on to release her debut solo album, "Apla Tragoudia," in 1977. Her self-titled 1981 album reached number one on both the Greek and Cypriot charts, and 1984 proved a pivotal year with two significant releases: "Prosanatolismoi," featuring lyrics by Nobel laureate Elytis, and "Exodos Kindynou," with lyrics by Lina Nikolakopoulou. Her best-selling album, "San Ifestio Pou Xipna" (1997), has sold more than 100,000 copies. Across her career she has released 16 studio albums. In 2015, she stepped outside music to serve as Greece's Alternate Minister of Tourism in the caretaker cabinet of Vassiliki Thanou-Christophilou.

International Recognition

Protopsalti has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Radio City Music Hall and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Kremlin Opera House in Moscow, the Forbidden City theater in Beijing, and the Gran Teatro in Havana, Cuba, backed by orchestras including the Boston Pops, the Oxford Philharmonic, and the Prague Symphony Orchestra. She also featured on Gipsy Kings' album "Turquoise Dream," and lent her voice to Greek-language Disney dubs, playing Esmeralda in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and Mother Gothel in "Tangled."

Diaspora Impact

Protopsalti's own history as a displaced Greek from Egypt gives her music particular resonance with diaspora audiences who share experiences of relocation and cultural upheaval. Her international performance record, spanning New York, Moscow, Beijing, and Havana, has built her a global audience well beyond Greek-speaking communities, making her one of the more internationally recognized voices in contemporary Greek éntekhno.
