About
Poly Panou was a titan of the Greek music scene from the 1950s through the 1980s. Discovered by Grigoris Bithikotsis, she possessed a "heavy," authoritative voice that became the benchmark for the Rembetiko and Laïkó genres. She was one of the few women to lead her own record label ("VIPS") during a male-dominated era. Although she passed away in 2013, her 2025 digital anthology became a major success, introducing her gritty, honest storytelling to a new generation. By 2026, she is remembered as a pioneer who paved the way for female independence in the industry and as the definitive voice of post-war urban Greece.
Diaspora Impact
An eternal icon for the global diaspora; her songs are cultural artifacts that define the spirit of the 20th-century Greek urban experience.
