About Marina Satti

Early Life

Marina Satti was born on December 26, 1986, in Athens, to a Sudanese Arab father, Ali Osman Satti, an anesthesiologist and former professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and a Cretan mother, Charikleia Filoxenidi, a chemical engineer from Heraklion. She lived in Athens until age six before being raised in Heraklion, Crete, a culturally diverse upbringing that shaped both her multicultural identity and her later musical style. She began classical piano training at seven and classical vocal training in high school, and in 2004 was admitted to the Architecture faculty at the National Technical University of Athens before shifting her path toward music.

Musical Style & Sound

Satti's sound fuses traditional Greek, Arabic, and Balkan music with modern pop, hip-hop, and electronic production, a combination shaped directly by the different musical traditions she grew up surrounded by. She graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2012 with a degree in Contemporary Writing and Production, studying under figures including Danilo Perez and Jamie Haddad, training that gave her compositional and production skills unusual among Greek pop artists of her generation. Her music moves fluidly between pop, urban, folk, and experimental modes, and in 2016 she founded Fonés, a female a cappella group performing traditional polyphonic songs at venues including the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus and the Athens Concert Hall.

Career Rise

Satti released her breakout single, "Koupes," in 2016, a contemporary rendition of a traditional Asia Minor song that drew more than 24 million YouTube views and was included on Ravin & Bob Sinclar's Buddha Bar 20th Anniversary compilation. Her debut album, "YENNA," followed in 2022 to strong commercial and critical reception, and her 2023 single "TUCUTUM" went viral for its playful use of Balkan trap trends. Her album "P.O.P." became record-breaking for a Greek artist, reaching the Global Spotify Debut Albums Top 10 and making her the first female artist to simultaneously hold the number one, two, and three spots on the Spotify Greece Top 200 chart.

Eurovision 2024

In October 2023, Satti was announced as Greece's representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, performing her song "Zari," which finished eleventh. "Zari" became the first Greek-language song to enter charts worldwide, giving her multicultural, genre-blending sound a global platform beyond what any previous Greek Eurovision entry had achieved.

Diaspora Impact

Satti's genre-blending sound, drawing on Greek, Arabic, and Balkan traditions, has given her an unusually broad international reach for a Greek artist, reinforced by a European tour spanning more than four months and international festival appearances in France, England, Switzerland, and Finland. Her Eurovision entry "Zari" becoming the first Greek-language song to chart worldwide extended that reach further, connecting her not only to traditional Greek and Cypriot diaspora audiences but to broader global listeners drawn to her multicultural sound.
